On the outside I’m a part time writer who has held various jobs over the years from basic labouring on building sites and in factories through to a stint as a security guard, mechanic, general DIY work, in fact anything that earned money. I can point to various retaining walls overlooking the highways around Melbourne and say I helped build that!
In 2003 I finally packed my bags and returned to Scotland after nearly forty years living in Melbourne. The Scots thought I was nuts and they’re probably right but I wanted to be closer to history and here it’s all around me from old ruins thousands of years old to more recent sites. I find it gives me a bit more focus when I write. I’ve travelled right around Scotland and have probably seen more of Scotland than a lot of Scots! Travel is one of my enduring passions.
Writing however is one of my greatest passions or biggest obsessions, depending on your outlook. The best way to define a writer that I've read, is someone who can't afford therapy so they live in their own little imagined worlds. Sometimes the voices in our heads make more sense. I did my diploma in professional writing at Box Hill TAFE in 1997/98 and that gave me the grounding in writing and editing, as well as web design. Since then I’ve written dozens of short stories, articles, reviews and two novels. My first novel was The Boston Slasher published with Authorhouse.com, my second one is The Deepening Dark, due out soon.
As to who I am? It’s hard to define who I am. I find my tastes in music, books, films and art too broad to put into a category. I’m as comfortable watching a romcom movie as one with car chases and firefights. I can read books like Twilight and get as much enjoyment from the series as the latest Dan Brown or a detailed history book. I don’t want to settle into a particular genre because I find it stifling and suffocating. I like combining genres to see what comes out in the mix.
So have a look around, don't be shy!
Cheers!
